Bluebell Inn, Hatfield – 6th August 2010

Posted by John on 7th August 2010 in Loose Tools Tour Diary!

A last-minute booking to play in a venue we’ve never been to..

With Dave (bass) still unavailable and Jazz (our stand-in bass player) away for the weekend we weren’t sure we’d be able to make it, but a very brave Jimbo agreed to help out at the last minute.

All credit goes to Jim for making the Bluebell a success, despite not having rehearsed any of the songs!

Being practically in Doncaster, the Bluebell is the furthest we’ve ventured for a while, but it was worth it..

The room was a good size and we were able to set up a full light show, which always adds to the atmosphere. The sound took a bit of taming at first, but we soon sorted out the various levels and got down to business.

The crowd were a friendly bunch and made plenty of noise, so we got into the groove and had a whale of a time.
Look out for us back in the Bluebell later this year!

The Woolpack, Brigg – 24th July 2010

Back in Brigg for a welcome return to the Woolly, still with Jazz on Bass while Dave continues his recovery.

There’s plenty of room in the Woolly, so we can fit loads of gear in and set up a really good light show. With two smoke machines working there was plenty of atmosphere, so much so that our illustrustrius drummer kept disappearing from view!

The crowd in Brigg are always up for a good time and didn’t let us down this time. The dancers were fantastic and the whole pub joined in with an impromtu rendition of Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall.. Brilliant! We might even learn the song ourselves one day..

Out of respect for Pete’s tortured vocal chords (and John the landlord’s neighbours) we called it a night after a couple of encores, but would’ve happily carried on all night if we could.

Thanks to everyone who was there making it another cracking gig!

We’re having most August off while Acko takes some holiday time.
Our next outing is Fr 10th Sept at Bailey’s in Grimsby. See you there!

Nunsthorpe Tavern, Grimsby – 10th July 2010

Dave (bass), is recovering well from his appedix operation, but still has a way to go before he’s fit enough to get back on stage. Get well soon Dave!

Fantastic stand-in bassist Jazz Jarrett continued to do us proud last night in the Tavern.

We love the Tavern. It’s one of the friendliest and most down-to-earth places we play, with a crowd who really know how to enjoy themselves!

We decided to set up in a different area of the room to where we normally play and it really worked out well. I tried a different amp setup and needed all the extra room I could get and Acko’s full kit takes up half and acre on its own! It all looked very impressive!

The show went very well. Good sound and a great crowd. It was absolutely sweltering though and we were all drenched with sweat, in spite of two big fans blowing and much wiping with towels.

All in all, another cracking night in the Tavern.. Make sure you don’t miss us next time we’re there.

Our next show is on 24th July in the Woolpack, Brigg. Another fantastic venue not to be missed..

The Dolphin, Yaddlethorpe – 26th June 2010

After a van breakdown and last-minute change of vehicle we arrived in Scunthorpe for the second gig of the weekend.

As usual the Dolphin was busy early on, the hot weather having had a very welcome effect on the attire of those nice lady patrons.. Always lovely to see those local girls ;)

We got set up in the sweltering heat and kicked off into a cracking gig. The crowd were on top form and we had a great time.

The Dolphin has turned into one of our favourite gigs.. Look out for us there again later in the year.

Brigg Servicemen’s Club – 25th July 2010

Thanks to stand-in bass player Jazz leaping into action when our own rumbler Dave went down with appendicitis, the show went on…

This was a wedding anniversary celebration and we were joined by Roadrunner disco who filled in the gaps between sets (loudly) and kept the dance floor full.

Setting up the sound was a little challenging and we seemed to struggle to find a balance for most of the night, but got through ok and the crowd seemed to enjoy themselves.

Huge thanks go to Jazz who aquitted himself very well (I think he remembered more of the songs than I did and I’ve been playing them for 3 years!)

The tour resumes tomorrow at the Dolphin in Yaddlethorpe..

Rehearsals – 23rd July 2010

Just when you think you’ve got everything running smoothly, Sod’s Law always manages to intervene…

After a long summer break for holidays we were all set to knock the rust off before going back on the road when, just a few hours before rehearsal time, our bass player goes down with appendicitis!

Really Dave.. If you wanted a bit longer holiday you only had to say!

With all expressions of sympathy duly directed at Dave in his hospital bed, we had to come up with something to make sure the 2 gigs this weekend went ahead.

Thankfully, Acko seems able to work the occasional miracle at times like this and he managed to conjure up a stand-in bass player out of thin air! (Pity he can’t do the same with roadies and groupies).

So, like a comic book superhero (ok, perhaps I’m getting carried away now), Carl ‘Jazz’ Jarrett stepped into the shoes formally occupied by our fallen comrade, sporting a left-handed 5 string device with the name Music Man emblazoned across the headstock!

Our hero managed to learn (more or less) the entire set in 2 and a half hours! What a star :)

On we go to Brigg Servicemen’s Club… I just hope Jazz doesn’t start wearing his y-fronts on the outside!

Bluestone Inn 8th May 2010

We had a cracking gig in Immingham last night!

There was a great crowd and some gorgeous dancers (I was one of them for a while), keeping things interesting out front. Thanks Sandy and friends!
We had to overcome a few technical issues before we could start, but once Pete had worked out how to operate a light switch it was ‘all systems go!’ (well done mate.. You won’t live that one down in a hurry.)

We had a great time.. The crowd were lively and loud and a pleasure to play for. We can’t wait to go back.

Fortunately Acko decided to hang onto his sticks tonight, so none of us were impaled…

We’ve got a few weeks off now, with holidays for some of us, but we’ll be back in action on the 26th June at the Dolphin in Yaddlethorpe. See you there! (Scunthorpe)

Crowle Liberal Club 1st May 2010

Posted by John on 2nd May 2010 in Loose Tools Tour Diary!

Crowle Liberal Club last night..
It’s a bit of a trek to get to for us (we’re lazy, so anything beyond the end of the street is a major inconvenience!), but well worth it..

This gig is an old favourite of ours. Sometimes it can be a bit quiet, but when the audience gets going they’re always entertaining, and last night they were on top form!

Apparently there’s something ’special’ in the water around Crowle and it seems to affect balance.
We had a wonderful dancer early on, who was pin-balling around the dance floor. Fortunately, Pete’s caring nature shone through and he managed to catch her before she fell over the monitors… twice.
After that she went to sit down and compose herself.. and fell off her seat.. twice. Brilliant!

Although she had to leave before the next set, there were plenty of other dancers willing to get up and entertain us..
The show was a good one and at the end we were pleased to oblige the shouts for ‘more!’

An interesting new feature of the show was Acko trying to harpoon us with randomly thrown drumsticks in the middle of songs.. Let’s hope he doesn’t decide to sharpen them before the next gig..

..which is at the Bluestone Inn in Immingaham on Sat 8th May 2010.

See you there!

Rehearsals

Loose Ends are rehearsing!
We’re taking some time out this month to work on new material, which will find its way into the set from May.
We got 2 new ones more or less ready to go tonight and a slack handful of others well on the way.

Watch this space…

Nunsthorpe Tavern 27th March 2010

Posted by John on 28th March 2010 in Loose Tools Tour Diary!

Well, we had a great gig at the Nunsthorpe Tavern last night…

This was a rescheduled show as the original booking had to be cancelled and, as ever, the Nunny crowd were on form and gave us a night to remember!

Our favourite air-guitarist, Shaggy, was there with his inflatable guitar and endless supply of energy.. Pat, the landlady, did a wonderful impression of a comedy bingo caller while keeping the locals in order.. Thanks Pat :)

The audience in the tavern are, er… a lively bunch, to say the least! It’s all in good fun though, and we love it there. We’ll be back later in the year, so keep an eye on the Gig List.

Our next show is on Saturday 1st May at the Liberal Club in Crowle, near Scunthorpe.
